Organic Jackfruit: How Our Sustainable Farming Protects the Soilcover

Organic Jackfruit: How Our Sustainable Farming Protects the Soil

Jackies jackfruit is 100% organic. It is grown without pesticides, weed killers or artificial fertilisers by small farmers in northern Sri Lanka and Indonesia who protect the soil and grow many crops side by side.

We are proud to say that our products are 100% organic. Around the world, soil suffers from pesticides and careless farming. So we think it is truly necessary to stand out in this way. Organic quality isn’t just for our jackfruit. It also covers things like the lime juice that keeps the flesh of Mladý Jacky F fresh.

What does “organic” mean?

Let’s remind ourselves what the organic label means. It promises that the food was made following the rules of organic farming. No pesticides, weed killers or artificial fertilisers were used to grow it.

Why is healthy soil so important?

Organic farming knows that soil is the base of life for land plants. So it is also the base of life for animals and people. Soil is home to many tiny living things, as well as plants and small creatures. All of them help keep the soil alive and rich. That is why we should protect it as much as we can.

Farmers also keep the soil rich and make it better in the places where our jackfruit grows. These are the areas where this crop grows best by nature: northern Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Why is tropical soil so fragile?

Tropical soil has far fewer nutrients than our soil in Central Europe. Plants take the nutrients back up so fast that no thick layer of rich soil (humus) can build up. Normal farming pays very little attention to this layer. It adds chemicals to make the soil more fertile, but they harm the life in the soil. So a new approach is really needed.

Why does organic farming matter?

It is better for you

Organic food is healthier. It has fewer nitrates and more nutrients, and it is often better for people with allergies.

It helps farmers

Farmers also gain from organic food. They can earn much more for organic products than for normal ones.

Northern Sri Lanka went through a long and painful civil war. Now all its regions are officially at peace. The main goal for the coming years is to build stability and a better life in the area. If that can go hand in hand with caring for nature, even better.

There are plenty of jackfruit trees there. So for a long time, farmers didn’t see them as a good business. Selling the fruit abroad brought them a new way to earn money. It also means that spare fruit gets bought and no longer goes to waste.

Why don’t our farmers grow just one crop?

On the farms where our jackfruit is picked, farmers grow more than jackfruit. In their fields and gardens you’ll also find pineapple, mango, tea and much more. Growing many different crops instead of just one supports the natural cycle.

That means:

  • no more huge plantations, often cleared by massive fires;

  • no more worn-out soil that washes away easily;

  • less damage from bad weather.

By farming organically, the small farmers we buy from protect their land today. They also keep it healthy for their children and grandchildren.

How can you help?

Life on earth depends on healthy soil. If future families are to farm this land too, we must take better care of it. When you buy our products, you help make this happen. Thank you.
